Wassup Jose Weblog nonsense at its best!

WassupJose Anniversary?

I just noticed that there are posts dating back to November 2007, can wassupjose.com be 1 year old? The November 2007 posts are Themes of the Week, which were back dated so we are nearing the 1 year mark.

I will poke around and get the create timestamps from the posts to make sure. It all started as a joke and a place to post the themes, but it is still moving along at a steady pace. Also, we are nearing the 400 post mark too. Nice.

Turkey Day!

I am sneaking in this post, but wanted to wish friends, family, colleagues, and our readers a happy Thanksgiving day. I am going to get my grub on, watch some movies, and relax for the next four days. Nice!

Scooter Boy Software

I inadvertently suggested that Scooter start Scooter Software, but we know that name is used by the author of the indespensible Beyond Compare DIFF utility. My bad! How about Scooter Boy Software?

Back to Beyond Compare for a moment. This is a must have utility for the developer, if you are living under a technology rock you are missing out. There are other compare utilities out there, but I keep coming back to Beyond Compare.

Reggaeton Rush!

I have listened to all 1072 songs on the iPod, so I thought I would change it up a bit. The DJ collection has just about every genre, but does not have Reggaeton. No problem, I can put a small collection together for the commute.

Well, I rarely listen to Latin music (go figure) and find this genre of music HOT! It is not for everyone of course, but I like the Latin beats (Puerto Rican) with the hip hop style lyrics. I am hooked at the moment, so it is the music of choice. Nice!

Scooter Software?

This is a little dated, but given the work I am doing at the moment I wanted to post this for Scooter. The developer that wrote Trism reports earning $250,000 profits in 2 months. Blow that taco stand and start Scooter Software.

It is also no secret that the iPhone has surpassed the Motorola Razr phone as the #1 selling cell phone. The community is large. So, Scooter when is that iPhone game scheduled to be released? Hurry, Christmas is a few weeks away!

Bathroom Etiquette II

This is a follow up to the original bathroom etiquette post. Why do people talk on the cell phone while in the bathroom? Not just in the bathroom, but while doing their business. It troubles me to think this is acceptable behavior.

The first time I saw it, I did not pay much attention to it. However, I am finding shit talking is more common than I want to admit. WTF! The call is SO important that you have to take it while you are in the crapper and tooting the tushy trumpet?

Well, I am never going to borrow anyone's cell phone again. Who knows if that person was using the cell phone while taking care of business in the crapper. Interestingly, I received an email regarding this same topic from the GM. Coincidence? Nope.

Hmm, I just recalled that some hotels put phones in the bathroom too. Not just anywhere of course, next to the toilet. Yeah, this is a classy joint. A phone in the toilet is definitely an indication that you are in a five star hotel.

Are You Kidding Me?

Ha! Tonight, I received an email from a recruiter regarding a position in Sacramento. Okay, not a big deal. I opened the cover letter and found the work was for a previous client. It was no ordinary project, it is the infamous Milkman project.

I respectfully declined, but did state that one of the reasons was due to the incompetent Project Manager that frequently put both the team and project at risk. He is not qualified to manage the project.

Hmm, I cannot help but think that Milkman will apply for the position. I am sure the client will welcome him with open arms. I hope the client finds a developer to help them achieve their goals, but with the current Project Manager they are hosed!

191 Proof …

Nope, this post is not about Everclear alcohol. Instead, the 191 refers to the $1.91 price of gasoline. Last night, I stopped and filled up the SUV at an AM/PM station. I was surprised to see the price for 87 octane was only $1.91.

Tonight, I drove by the same station and noticed that 87 octane was only $1.89. Nice! I was able to fill up the SUV for less than $50.00 compared to $100.00 plus back in July. Hopefully, gasoline prices will remain low through the holidays.

WD MyBook Problems

I purchased a 1TB Western Digital drive several months ago, so I could archive a collection of music. Well, since purchasing the drive I am experiencing intermittent problems. If that were not enough, the drive is formatted using the FAT system from the factory.

The most annoying problem is the computer will NOT boot properly if the drive is plugged into a USB port. WTF! is right, because the drive is supposed to automatically turn on and off with the computer.

Another problem is that the drive appears to have a problem waking up when I attach the drive to the computer after I boot up. It is not the USB port, because I have tested other drives with no problems.

Lastly, the FAT system does not allow me to copy files over 4GB due to the file limits. How do I format the drive using NTFS? One option is to purchase another drive, format it NTFS, copy files to the new drive, and then reformat the first drive. Arggh!

Gouda

I found this code snippet while I was cleaning up my application today inside a function called "ProcessEditsReal"

'strWriteFile = "c:\nalita\vbpractice\testfiles\sampleDRGResult.txt"

The function name made me smack my head already. "this is the real one!" But then to find this person had a folder named "vbpractice" on his/her drive. Learning on the job is one thing, but these seems like perhaps this person wasn't very good at their job. Or maybe I'm just too critical?
