Another Xbox 360 Tidbit

Here is another tidbit for the gamers in our audience. Read the problem statement below, courtesy of Microsoft KB article 960626, and then read my comments.

When you attempt to use the PlayOnline Viewer for the Xbox 360 game "Final Fantasy XI," you receive the error message: "This game cannot start. Please download the data"

Per the support article, players may experience one of two issues. For me, the game failed to start and I received error message "This game cannot start. Please download the data." without fail. WTF is wrong now?

Some forums hint that it may be due to the NXE (New Xbox Experience) update and others hint at other root causes. This is not going to be an easy one is it? Some suggested clearing the system cache and attempting some funky MP3 player hack to fix it. Yeah right.

Wait a minute, what does Microsoft suggest? Are you ready? Microsoft's recommendation is labeled, "Things to try". Crap! Time to roll the dice on this one. Anyway, Microsoft support suggests uninstalling the software from the PlayOnline Viewer and reinstalling FF XI.

Well, that is easier said than done since I cannot access the PlayOnline Viewer at all! Like I said, it is going to be a roll of the dice. Enough of the rambling, here is what worked for me (you may have a different experience or issue).

I could not access the PlayOnline Viewer from the Xbox 360 control panel, so I pulled out the handy-dandy Wings Of The Goddess DVD and inserted into the Xbox 360 console. Using the WoTG disc, I was able to uninstall and re-install the PlayOnline Viewer.

Once the PlayOnline Viewer was re-installed and updated, I re-installed FF XI to the drive. Not so fast Ricky Racer. The FF XI installation failed each time! SOB! Clean the DVD and try the installation again. It worked for me. What a pain in the ASS. Good luck!
